[Masterclass] Eating Disorders – Not Just Anorexia! with Dr Karen Spielman & Dr Susan Barnett

Session overview:

Join Dr Susan Barnett and Dr Karen Spielman for an interactive and practical deep dive into managing eating disorders across diverse presentations. This 6 hour masterclass is designed for GPs and primary care clinicians who are seeking to enhance their confidence and skills in working with patients affected by eating disorders.

Drawing on real-world clinical cases and combining skillsets, Susan will provide a more psychotherapeutic focus while Karen will use a more medically focused lens to guide you through four detailed case discussions, covering:

  • Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa
  • Avoidant and Restrictive Eating (ARFID)
  • Binge Eating in Patients in Larger Bodies
  • Family-Based Therapy in Adolescents

Each case will include 30–40 minutes of expert discussion, followed by an extended Q&A session. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own questions and clinical scenarios for a collaborative, highly relevant learning experience.

This masterclass will be grounded in current evidence, lived experience, and multidisciplinary collaboration, giving you practical strategies to implement in your practice the next day.

Learning outcomes:

1. Recognise and manage less common and complex eating disorder presentations in general practice.

2. Apply whole-person, team-based approaches to support patients with eating disorders and their families using FPS techniques.

3. Reflect on diagnostic uncertainty and clinical decision-making through peer discussion and case-based learning.

4. Recognise the value of collegiate connections with other GP’s who provide complex mental health care for eating disorders in general practice.
